Hong Kong Cantonese Wonton Noodles
Hon’s Wun-Tun House is a legendary Cantonese noodle spot in San Francisco’s Chinatown. They first set up shop on Kearny Street back in 1972 before opening this Washington Street location; today, they have three spots across the city. The interior has that classic, old-school noodle house charm: wooden tables, blue-and-white patterned porcelain bowls, and masters hand-wrapping wontons and dumplings right in the shop. The menu is fully bilingual and every dish has a code (starting with F, G, J, or K)—just calling out the number is the fastest way to get your order in. They’re open from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, serving up everything from congee (savory rice porridge) to cheong fun (silky steamed rice rolls) all day, so you aren't limited to just lunch or dinner hours. Their signature Hong Kong-style Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup (F1) pairs thin egg noodles with a clear, savory broth. The wonton skins are so thin you can see the pink shrimp meat inside, and the noodles soak up the soup while still keeping a firm bite. The West Lake Beef Dumplings (G13) come ten to an order, stuffed with a mix of beef, carrots, and celery; the skins are a bit thicker, giving you a nice crunch from the veggies when you bite in. The Beef Chow Fun (K11) has incredible wok hei—that smoky "breath of the wok" flavor from high-heat frying. The rice noodles are perfectly separated with charred edges, the beef is velvety, and the bean sprouts and scallions stay crisp without getting watery. The Sautéed Pea Shoots with Garlic (J2) uses whole cloves for a fragrant finish, featuring only the tenderest tips of the greens for a sweet, refreshing palate cleanser. The menu also features siu mei (Cantonese roasted meats) over rice, various noodle soups, and small side dishes. Perfect for family gatherings, hanging out with friends, or taking the elders out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
